The "J.Chair": A Monument to Jake Lah’s Genius, in Collaboration with Tom Sachs
It’s a tremendous honor to work with Jake Lah, the greatest aluminum tube maker of all time, a title that may sound niche, until you realize how profoundly he has shaped the way we sit, camp, rest, and relate to objects that combine precision with poetry. Lah is not merely a designer or an engineer. He is a sculptor of lightness, a minimalist of form, and a visionary who saw potential in the most unassuming of materials: aluminum tubing.

The J-Chair, created in collaboration with artist Tom Sachs, is the latest expression of this ethos scaled up from the iconic Helinox camping chair that Jake first introduced to the world, and which has since been endlessly copied but never equaled. With Sachs’ provocative, utilitarian aesthetic and Lah’s engineering mastery, the J-Chair becomes more than a seat. It becomes an object of intent, an interface between art, industry, and everyday life.
This is a chair for all terrains and all contexts: a New York sidewalk, a mountainside, your living room, or even the moon. The generous seating area makes entry and exit feel natural and unforced. The raw, bead-blasted aluminum frame is strong, refined, and uncoated. Its natural-rubber Vibram boots, borrowed from mountaineering gear, stabilize the chair on sand, stone, or lunar regolith. The X-Pac fabric, a high-performance polyester-nylon blend, does more than cradle the body. It visibly reveals the chair’s structural logic, making engineering visible as design language.

This is not furniture as decoration. It is furniture as manifesto. The J-Chair is a declaration of craft, collaboration, and clarity. It represents the convergence of two minds: Jake Lah, master of ultralight structures, and Tom Sachs, whose practice elevates function to philosophy. To work alongside both of them is not just an honor. It’s an immersion into a shared belief: that how something is made is just as important as what it is.
